Procedure

1)      On page 2 of my document, there is a header/title at the top. So my first page number (being ‘2’ because the title page is counted but not numbered) is inserted at the bottom of the page by clicking “page setup” on the pagination toolbar. Your toolbar is probably ‘floating.’ I just put mine there for prosperity. It will go away whenever you hit the “close” button on that toolbar.

2)      In “page setup” I choose “This point forward” to tell MSWord that ‘from this point on repeat last command,’ which in this case is to number at the footer and in the center. Therefore, all footers will be numbered this way. We will change this, however.

a.       NOTE: Although it’s frustrating, don’t be shocked that MSWord immediately ‘jerks’ your screen/document position into place, as illustrated in the demo. It thinks it’s doing you a favor. Just readjust as you need.

3)      Next, you need to actually insert the number. You COULD type it in manually, but MSWord will automate a lot of the tasks if you use the insert method.

a.       We are choosing a centered number, so select that in the ‘alignment’ dropdown menu.

b.      Ensure you un-check the “Show number on first page” box.

c.       Now I am double-checking to show that there was no number inserted on the title page. Good so far.

4)      MSWord has this incessant behavior (bug?) of inserting a new page when you follow this procedure. So for argument’s sake, we’re just going to hit ‘close’ then go to the top of the blank page that was inserted and hit the delete key. Then Go to “View – headers and footers” again. Simple enough.

5)      Scrolling down to page 3, we need to insert a number in the far-right corner, ala’ Turabian formatting.

a.       Click in the header on page 3.

b.      Repeat the process of applying ‘From this point forward.’ Yes, you’ll need to do this each time you want to change the style or formatting on any header/footer of any page.

c.       Now here is the KEY to proper pagination: On this video you’ll see that I’ve allowed the mouse to hang for a moment over “link to previous” on the pagination toolbar. This is automatically selected. We want to de-Select it in this case because we don’t want it to continue with the same formatting as the last page we numbered.

d.      Again, choose “Page Numbers” from the top MSWord insert menu, this time choose to align it to the right.

6)      Scroll down and you will see that all the pages below are numbered the same as page 3, all at the top, all to the right. Good so far. But what if you want to change one below that? Simple. Just repeat the process.

7)      Going to page six, just for the sake of illustration we will alter the position of ‘6’ to be placed to the left of the header. If you wanted, you could put it anywhere including at the footer if you de-select ‘Link to previous’ on the toolbar and select ‘From this point forward’ in the page setup. Essentially this process isolates each page unto itself, regardless of the style of the other pages.

a.       First we have to set the page up to ‘this point forward’

b.      Then you actually have to delete the ‘6’ from the header (I used the delete key). Ensure you actually select the ‘box’ around the number and not the number itself.

c.       Then just reinsert a number wherever you want it.

8)      Ensuring afterward that all the page numbers are just where we want them, we are now done.

9)      Hit “Close” then save the document.
